So what is it ? And why is it so fabulous ???

Well, addressing the last question first, the reason it's so faboulous (or at least one of the reasons) is that it's

What is it?

It's pinestraw! That simple, but it's simple to get (I'm sure fallen leaves would work just as well, though since they are more fragile and easy to crumble, making more of a mess to clean up) and serves several purposes. Not only does it give your cemetray a somewhat 'unkept' appearance, but it also serves to hide extention cords and other such things that may be running across the ground for lighting and other special effects.

Being October, you might also take the opportunity to cut down or prune some of those 'came-up-from-nowhere' small trees and unwieldy shrubs. Just make sure (particularly with the trees) that the end of the stem or trunk is not too big in diameter and be sure to cut the ends on a slant to create a spike end that you can push down into the ground. These soon to wilt pieces of greenery make a nice addition to the graveyard and larger branches or small trees can help form a background to your graveyard.
